Daughter, Azeem Held in Rs90L Roorkee Theft from Father’s Home

Uttarakhand couple steals cash stash from ancestral house

by Ananya Mehta

In a shocking case of betrayal, police in Roorkee arrested three people, including a woman and her husband, for allegedly stealing Rs90 lakh in cash from her father’s locked ancestral house.

The incident came to light after Mohammad Sarwar Ahmed, the woman’s father, reported that the money—proceeds from a recent godown sale—had vanished from a vault in his unoccupied home. On April 10, Sarwar received a call from neighbors informing him that the house’s lock had been broken. Upon arrival, he discovered the cash missing and contacted the police.

Sarwar mentioned to police that his daughter had visited the house that day and had been behaving unusually, including speaking in hushed tones on her phone.

Suspicion quickly fell on the daughter and her husband, Azeem, a local gym trainer. During interrogation, the couple confessed to the crime. Investigators later arrested Waseem, Azeem’s brother, who also received a portion of the stolen cash.

According to police, Azeem entered the house in the afternoon, stole the cash, and left undetected while his wife stayed on a phone call with him. The loot was distributed across several locations:

Rs48 lakh hidden at their home

Rs1 lakh at Azeem’s supplement shop

Rs10 lakh handed to Waseem

Part of the funds used to buy jewellery

Authorities recovered around Rs60 lakh in cash, jewellery, and the car used in the heist. The trio has been booked under BNS Sections 305-A (theft) and 331-3 (housebreaking with intent to commit an offence).

Police reconstructed the crime using CCTV footage and confessions from the accused. Speaking on the case, SSP Pramendra Singh Dobal stated that the income tax department would be informed to investigate the source of such a large sum of undeclared cash.
