DAVENPORT, Iowa — A 23-year-old Quad-City man was arrested early Saturday after attempting to evade arrest by jumping into the Mississippi River.

At around 3:29 a.m. on June 29, officers with the Davenport Police Department spotted Darryl Shears driving in the 200 block of LeClaire Street. Knowing that Shears had active arrest warrants for firearms and drug offenses, police conducted a traffic stop on the Rock Island Arsenal Bridge.

As officers approached, Shears fled the vehicle on foot and leaped into the nearby Mississippi River in an attempt to avoid capture.

After a short search, officers found him clinging to a roller dam structure in the river. A multi-agency water rescue operation was launched, and Shears was safely brought to shore and taken into custody without further incident.

Multiple agencies assisted in the operation, including the Bettendorf Police Department, Davenport Fire Department, Iowa State Patrol, Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Arsenal Public Safety, Illinois State Police, Scott County Sheriff’s Office, Rock Island Police Department, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The incident remains under investigation.
