LOUISVILLE, Ky. — An Ohio man is behind bars after allegedly posing as a police officer and scamming a Kentucky woman out of a large sum of money.
The incident began on September 17, when a woman in Clay County received a threatening call from a man claiming she was facing criminal charges. He instructed her to prepare money and wait at home until no one was around.
While the victim was reporting the incident to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy overheard the man on the phone telling her he would arrive at her home soon.
Later that day, 21-year-old Danil Dovzhuk, of Loveland, Ohio, showed up at the victim’s residence. The family confronted him, but he fled the scene before law enforcement arrived.
Deputies later stopped Dovzhuk near the intersection of U.S. 421 and U.S. 11. His vehicle reportedly had police-style interceptor markings and resembled an unmarked law enforcement vehicle.
During the arrest, the victim’s son arrived and informed police that Dovzhuk had taken a significant amount of money from the family.
Dovzhuk was charged with theft by deception and impersonating a peace officer. He is currently being held at the Clay County Detention Center without bond.
Clay County is located approximately three hours south of Louisville.
