NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — A Daniel Island man was arrested Tuesday in connection with the theft of copper electrical wire from a North Charleston restaurant.

Police officers conducting foot patrols near the Ruby Tuesday on January 31 were alerted by a hotel employee who reported suspicious activity. Upon investigation, officers discovered three power panels at the restaurant with their doors open and all copper wiring removed.

Surveillance footage confirmed non-guests had removed the wire and transported it to a nearby hotel room. Four individuals were questioned and issued trespass notices.

Further investigation identified 54-year-old Benjamin Shaffer as one of the suspects. Shaffer surrendered to police and was charged with damage to property while stealing metals. He was booked into the Al Cannon Detention Center. Authorities said additional arrests are possible.
