Daniel Harty Arrested in Ireland After UK Prison Escape

Notorious burglar caught in Co Meath; faces extradition

CO MEATH, Ireland — ARDAI officers have arrested Daniel Harty, a 34-year-old convicted burglar who escaped from HMP Springhill in the UK last month. Harty was apprehended earlier today in the Trim area of County Meath, according to sources close to the investigation.

Harty had been on the run since June 23, when he fled from the open prison facility in Buckinghamshire. He was formally declared a fugitive on June 26 and had since managed to cross into Ireland, where authorities say he was hiding.

A source close to the case told The Irish Sun:

“This is a great result and shows the importance of international cooperation. He somehow managed to make it back to Ireland but is now facing a longer sentence.”

Daniel Harty is considered one of the UK’s most notorious burglars, having played a central role in a sophisticated burglary gang that stole over £300,000 worth of jewellery and cash from homes across the UK in 2023. He was originally serving a 12-year sentence for his part in that crime spree.

Harty has been remanded in custody and is expected to appear at a special court sitting as UK authorities apply for his extradition.

Meanwhile, two other fugitives who escaped alongside him — Jason MacDonagh (34) and Barney Casey (24) — remain at large. All three men were part of the same organized gang and were serving time for high-value residential burglaries.

UK police had previously warned that Harty had connections to Ireland, which helped accelerate coordination with Irish authorities and ultimately led to his arrest.
