MIAMI, FL – A couple from Cuba, Janette Bárbara Blanco, 32, and Eric Cordero, 29, were arrested recently in Miami after being linked to a series of motorcycle thefts across Miami-Dade County. Authorities suspect that this is part of an ongoing criminal operation rather than an isolated incident.
Blanco and Cordero face charges of third-degree vehicle theft and unlawful occupation of a property under false identities. The two appeared before the Miami-Dade criminal court on Wednesday, where the official charges were filed.
The arrest followed a citizen’s report regarding a stolen motorcycle from a residential building at 15 South Shore Drive. Police discovered that the suspects arrived at the scene on a red motorcycle, which they abandoned in the parking lot before stealing a blue motorcycle and fleeing the area.
Surveillance camera footage helped detectives track the couple to a home in Coral Gables, where they raided the property. The authorities found dismantled motorcycles and scooters, all believed to be stolen, suggesting that Blanco and Cordero may be part of a larger theft ring.
During their interrogation, the suspects admitted to the theft on February 9 but police believe they’ve been stealing motorcycles in Miami-Dade County for at least two years.
“This couple has been together for about two years, and they’ve been focused on stealing motorcycles,” said police spokesperson Mike Vega in an interview with America Tevé.
Authorities have linked Blanco and Cordero to at least three other motorcycle thefts in the area. As a result, new charges may be forthcoming. The case has raised concerns among Miami motorcycle owners, who fear falling victim to similar crimes.
In response, the police have issued security recommendations to help prevent further thefts, including installing immobilizing “boots” on motorcycles or using chains anchored to the ground to make them more difficult to steal.
Although the court has set bail for Blanco and Cordero, it has not yet been confirmed whether they have been able to pay the bail and secure their release.
