SPRINGFIELD, Ga. – Craig Heidt, 41, was arrested Friday and charged with the murder of his father and younger brother, nearly nine months after a shocking triple shooting rocked the Heidt family and the Effingham County community.

Heidt faces two counts of murder in the August 25, 2008 killings of Philip Martin Heidt, a prominent real estate developer, and Carey Albert Heidt, 32, his younger brother. The suspect’s mother, Linda Heidt, was also shot but survived and called 911 from the family’s Springfield home, located about 26 miles from Savannah.

Authorities confirmed that Craig Heidt was also charged with aggravated battery in the shooting of his mother. He is currently being held in the Effingham County Jail, and law enforcement officials did not disclose whether he has legal representation.

At a brief press conference, Sheriff Jimmy McDuffie declined to comment on a possible motive or specifics about the nine-month investigation. Officials from the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said over 100 interviews were conducted, noting the complexity of the case due to Philip Heidt’s extensive business ties.

Philip Heidt, 59, was known as a leading figure in local real estate development and had served as president of the local chamber of commerce. He and Carey, who began working alongside his father in his teens, were described as respected and deeply involved in the community.

“I still feel the loss every day,” said Alice DeForest, a longtime colleague of Philip Heidt. “It’s still like a dream.”

Linda Heidt’s current location remains undisclosed, and those close to the family, including Carey’s wife Robin Heidt, declined to speak publicly.

Officials emphasized that the case was methodically handled to ensure a strong prosecution. “We had one shot at this case and wanted to make sure it was done right,” said sheriff’s spokesman David Ehsanipoor.
