VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — A North Carolina man has been arrested and extradited to Florida after allegedly scamming a 70-year-old Volusia County woman out of nearly $60,000 through a false story involving a wounded military dog and a retired Army general.
Authorities say Cory Woodall, 56, convinced the woman to send large sums of money under the pretense that it would aid a military dog injured overseas and assist in bringing a retired general back to the United States. Instead, investigators say Woodall used the funds for personal expenses.
The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office reports that Woodall purchased a 2023 Hyundai, a trailer, and a lawn mower with the money. Deputies added that roughly half of the funds were sent in cash.
Woodall was arrested in Oxford, North Carolina and extradited to Volusia County, where he now faces charges of grand theft and organized scheme to defraud. He was booked into jail on Tuesday afternoon.
Sheriff Mike Chitwood personally confronted Woodall during the booking process and informed him that he would be held without bond.
The woman who was victimized plans to seek restitution through the court system, according to deputies.
In a separate but unrelated case, Vladimir Ranguelov, a businessman connected to dealerships in Colonie, NY, and Florida, was also arrested on charges of organized fraud and dealing in stolen property. He is scheduled for arraignment on September 17 and was released on $125,000 bond.
