LEXINGTON COUNTY, S.C. — A Midlands man has been charged with stealing nearly $50,000 from a nursing home resident, authorities say.
Cory Daniel Busbee, 44, of Gaston, was arrested by the Attorney General’s Office’s Vulnerable Adults and Medicaid Provider Fraud (VAMPF) unit.
Investigators found that between March 6, 2023, and October 2, 2024, Busbee allegedly exploited a vulnerable adult by unlawfully using the victim’s funds for personal gain.
While serving as the victim’s power of attorney, Busbee is accused of making unauthorized withdrawals and purchases totaling approximately $48,529.25, all for his own benefit, depriving the victim of their assets. During this time, the victim, legally classified as a vulnerable adult under South Carolina law, resided in a nursing home in Lexington County.
Busbee faces two charges:
Exploitation of a Vulnerable Adult
Breach of Trust with Fraudulent Intent, value $10,000 or more
He was booked into the Lexington County Detention Center on February 20.
