EAST ALTON, IL — Two men face serious charges after allegedly targeting an elderly East Alton woman in a fraud scheme involving identity theft and wire fraud.

Cory Breuer, 43, of Godfrey, has been charged with aggravated identity theft and deceptive practices, with the allegations dating back to April 2024.

Meanwhile, 65-year-old Jody Wesley, of Bethalto, faces two counts of wire fraud connected to offenses from October 2023.

According to Better Business Bureau Investigator Don O’Brien, the case is a reminder to stay vigilant about protecting personal information, especially for seniors who are often targeted by scammers.

Both Breuer and Wesley were released under the provisions of the SAFE-T Act, which eliminates cash bail for certain non-violent offenses in Illinois.

Law enforcement and consumer protection agencies continue to stress the importance of safeguarding sensitive data and reporting any suspicious activity.
