Corey Dixon has been convicted of attempted first-degree murder and being a prisoner in possession of a deadly weapon following his violent assault on fellow inmate Michael Bradley at the Curry County Detention Center in 2021. Ninth Judicial District Attorney Quentin Ray announced the verdict after the jury delivered its decision.

The attack occurred on June 3, 2021, when Bradley, who was legally blind, was critically injured in a brutal assault initiated by Dixon while Bradley was asleep in his bed. Surveillance footage revealed Dixon using Bradley’s walking cane to beat him before strangling him with a towel. Dixon briefly left to shower due to the blood but returned to continue the attack, stomping on Bradley’s head against the concrete floor for a total of 15 minutes.

Bradley sustained catastrophic injuries, including the dislodging of his eyeball from its socket, as a witness testified. He was airlifted to a hospital in Lubbock, Texas, for emergency treatment. Although Bradley survived the attack, he passed away on December 24, 2024, from a heart attack.

District Attorney Quentin Ray condemned the attack, stating, “Mr. Bradley was a vulnerable individual, and the sheer cruelty of this attack is horrifying. We are grateful to the jury for their attention and their service in delivering justice.”

Dixon now faces up to 26 years in the New Mexico Department of Corrections. A sentencing hearing will be scheduled at a later date.
