City police have intensified anti-theft operations, leading to the arrest of several accused persons and recovery of stolen property across multiple areas, officials said.
Basistha Police Station apprehended two habitual thieves, Ikram Hussain (25) and Ijazul Haque (19), in connection with a theft case. Acting on specific intelligence and with help from Meghalaya Police, officers conducted a search at a scrapyard in Them Marwet, Ri-Bhoi district, recovering six 12-volt batteries. The scrapyard owner, Ainal Haque (28), was also taken into custody.
In a separate operation at Bongaon, Basistha Police arrested three seasoned burglars while they were transporting stolen items in an e-rickshaw (registration AS01-ER-2550). The accused were Altaf Ali (22) from Barpather, Dipak Chetry (25) from 9th Mile, and Sunil Basfor (22) from Bongaon. Police recovered a cutter machine, drill, Exide battery, and several iron pipes from them.
Meanwhile, Fatasil Ambari Police, with support from Paltan Bazar Police, recovered a stolen TVS NTORQ scooter (registration AS01EM6710). Two youths, Sariful Ali (19) and Sujit Das (20) from Jyotikuchi, were arrested for allegedly stealing the vehicle earlier this month.
In another quick action, Basistha Police solved a theft case within three hours of being reported. Milan Chetry (25), also known as Honey Singh from 10th Mile, was arrested. Police recovered two mobile phones and burglary tools, and the accused reportedly confessed during interrogation.
Additionally, two alleged bike lifters were apprehended within 24 hours of a theft report. Officers recovered a stolen Honda Activa scooter (registration AS01-BZ-4253) from the Maligaon Overbridge parking area. The accused were identified as Devajit Kakati (42) from Nagaon and Jaydeep Barman (23) from Bhangagar.
Police officials said the operations reflect their commitment to curb thefts and urged citizens to report suspicious activities promptly.
