DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — A 31-year-old man has been charged with murder following the death of a woman after a standoff with police at a Durham apartment complex on Wednesday.
Police identified the suspect as Christopher Brian Whitley, who was taken into custody after an hours-long barricade situation at the 1100 block of Laurel Springs Drive.
The standoff began around 12:32 p.m., when officers responded to reports of a barricaded individual. Authorities quickly set up a perimeter and attempted to communicate with Whitley. He eventually surrendered peacefully and was arrested.
After entering the residence, police discovered 34-year-old Auriel Lowe of Durham dead inside. Investigators believe that Whitley and Lowe were in a domestic relationship at the time of the incident.
Whitley is now facing a murder charge, and the case remains under investigation by the Durham Police Department.
