Georgia woman accused of defrauding Daytona Beach resident

by Amelia Crawford

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — A Georgia woman has been arrested in Volusia County for her alleged role in a $17,000 Bitcoin scam that targeted a Daytona Beach resident.

Authorities identified the suspect as Christina Rimes, who now faces fraud charges. According to investigators, the victim was tricked by a phony claim involving a federal warrant supposedly issued by a North Carolina sheriff’s office. Believing the claim was legitimate, the victim sent $17,000 in Bitcoin.

Detectives from the Volusia Sheriff’s Office financial crimes unit traced the scam back to Rimes using bank and cryptocurrency transaction records. Further investigation revealed the scheme was part of a broader operation involving inmates at Georgia State Prison, who were allegedly working with outsiders to funnel illicit funds into prison commissary accounts.

The Volusia Sheriff’s Office is urging the public to be cautious and verify any suspicious legal claims, especially those demanding payments in cryptocurrency.
