A special team of the Greater Chennai Police has arrested three habitual offenders from Pune district along with a jeweller from Beed district in connection with a house break-in in Vyasarpadi, Chennai, on September 23, 2024. The accused stole 960 grams of gold from the residence of a schoolteacher and her trader husband.
The jeweller, who allegedly purchased the stolen gold for Rs 25 lakh, was apprehended in Beed district after attempting a dramatic escape late Monday night.
Following the FIR filed at the P3 Vyasarpadi police station, Chennai Police scrutinized footage from over 600 CCTVs. With no immediate leads, suspect photos were shared on a nationwide police group on social media, resulting in a tip-off linking the accused to Pimpri Chinchwad, Pune.
Acting swiftly, the special team led by Tr Rajkiran, working with Pimpri-Chinchwad Police, arrested the trio: Chandrakant Mane (32), Shashikant Mane, and Mangesh Sangle (27). Interrogations revealed they sold the stolen gold to a jeweller in Kaij, Beed district.
Deputy Commissioner K Muthukumar coordinated with Beed SP Navneet Kanwat. Although the jeweller initially fled by climbing to his terrace, he later surrendered and confessed to purchasing the stolen gold.
Police reported that the jeweller tried to bribe Tamil Nadu police to avoid recovery of the gold and release. However, the police team declined, pressing for full disclosure and return of the stolen items.
“The timely sharing of information and coordination between Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra police was crucial in cracking this case,” said a senior officer.
The accused are known habitual offenders who typically targeted homes during daylight when residents were away, leveraging their familiarity with the locality and swift escape routes.
