SAN MATEO – Three men from Virginia were arrested in San Mateo County for their involvement in a roofing scam that targeted elderly residents on the Peninsula, police said.
In November 2023, the San Mateo Police Department began investigating a group of men posing as contractors with “Irish accents,” operating under a fake construction company named “Statewide Roofing and Siding.”
The suspects reportedly used a fraudulent contractor’s license, performed unnecessary repairs, and overcharged for work they never completed.
During their investigation, San Mateo police collaborated with other local departments and discovered additional victims of similar scams.
On May 7, police received a new complaint from a victim who suspected the company hired to repair his mother’s roof was scamming him. After a “free” inspection, the company recommended minor repairs, then escalated to suggesting the entire roof needed replacement.
The suspects used fake identities and a second company name, “Teco Roofing and Masonry.” On May 8, police arrested the three men involved: 22-year-old Charlie Anderson, 39-year-old David Anderson, and 40-year-old Darren Temple, all residents of Herndon, Virginia.
The suspects face charges including elder theft, obtaining money by false pretenses, fraudulent use of a contractor’s license, and conspiracy. As of Thursday, they remain in custody at San Mateo County Jail, awaiting their next court appearance on May 22.
