Charles Edwards Sentenced to 8 Years for Armed Wawa Confrontation

WASHINGTON — Charles Edwards, 49, has been sentenced to eight years in prison for an armed confrontation inside a Wawa convenience store in Northwest D.C. that occurred more than three years ago. The sentence was announced Tuesday following Edwards’ earlier conviction on multiple felony charges.

Edwards was found guilty of two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, unlawful possession of a firearm, and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence. The charges relate to an incident on January 22, 2022, during which Edwards chased a man into the Wawa, pointed a loaded gun at the man and a store employee, and threatened a Special Police Officer attempting to intervene.

The judge handed down the sentence on Monday in D.C. Superior Court. Along with the prison term, Edwards will serve three years of supervised release after his incarceration.

Court records detail the confrontation beginning early that morning outside the store, when Edwards engaged in a heated argument with another man. The man fled inside the Wawa, followed by Edwards, who escalated the altercation. A Special Police Officer initially removed Edwards from the store, but he returned minutes later.

Inside, Edwards pursued the man around the store and drew a loaded handgun, pointing it at both the man and the cashier who was caught in the middle. Edwards then fled the store, threatening the officer who was on a 911 call.

Though shaken, no customers or employees were physically harmed during the incident. Edwards was arrested on a warrant nearly seven months later, on August 17, 2022, and has been held in custody since then.
