In a swift crackdown on rising street crime, the Basistha Police in Guwahati have arrested two individuals—Amir Ali and Kishore Medhi—in connection with a series of chain snatching incidents across the city.
The duo was apprehended during an ongoing investigation into a wave of thefts that had sparked concern among local residents. Based on leads from the suspects, police conducted raids at two jewellery shops—Jaishankar Jewellery and Arpana Jewellery—resulting in the seizure of a large quantity of suspected stolen gold and silver ornaments.
Following the recovery, Hemanta Anand Rao Yadav and Anish Chetry, owners of the two jewellery stores, were also arrested for allegedly purchasing stolen goods linked to the thefts. Police are interrogating both shopkeepers to determine their involvement and whether they were knowingly buying jewellery from the accused chain snatchers.
Authorities suspect a wider network behind the string of thefts and are now exploring links to other criminal operations in the region. The successful arrests and recovery are being viewed as a major step toward curbing street-level crimes in Guwahati.
Police have reiterated their commitment to maintaining law and order and ensuring the safety of citizens.
