Chad James, 37, was first arrested in February 2023 while attempting to board a flight to Zurich from Manchester Airport. The arrest came after Operation Venetic, a major investigation following the takedown of the encrypted Encrochat network, flagged his criminal activities.
James, currently held at HMP Wymott, later admitted to conspiracy to supply Class A and B drugs, money laundering, and conspiracy to supply a firearm. He was initially sentenced to 16 years in prison in August 2023.
Despite being behind bars, James continued to orchestrate drug trafficking from his cell. He collaborated with associate Mark McGovern, 62, from Blackpool, who coordinated couriers to distribute drugs and cash on his behalf.
Earlier this month, Lancashire Police’s Serious and Organised Crime Unit concluded the operation, resulting in multiple convictions. James received an additional 4 years and 11 months, bringing his total sentence to over 20 years. Combined sentences for the gang exceeded 100 years.
Detective Chief Inspector Tom Edmondson said: “Chad James led a sophisticated organised criminal network, distributing significant quantities of drugs across Lancashire and beyond. These sentences reflect the severity of his crimes. Our efforts to combat organised crime continue, and we remain committed to protecting our communities.”
