The Central Crime Branch (CCB) arrested 37-year-old Ramya Madhavan for defrauding a Kanyakumari resident of Rs 60.50 lakh by falsely promising admission to a medical college for her daughter in 2022. Ramya was remanded in judicial custody after being produced before a magistrate court.
The complainant, 45-year-old Rosemary Russell, had sought an MBBS seat for her daughter and was introduced to Ramya and her associate Antony Das through acquaintances. The accused duo claimed to wield influence in healthcare and education sectors, assuring admission upon payment.
Between February and May 2022, Rosemary paid the amount in multiple instalments through cash and bank transfers. To add credibility, the complainant was taken to the Directorate of Medical Education (DME) office in Teynampet, and her daughter was shown a forged admission order. An additional Rs 1.38 lakh was also collected as hostel fees.
When the admission did not materialize, Rosemary demanded a refund. Ramya returned Rs 29.50 lakh in instalments but failed to repay the remaining Rs 31.88 lakh. On August 27, 2024, Rosemary filed a formal complaint with Chennai Police Commissionerate. The Entrustment Document Fraud Wing-III (EDF-III) took up the case, leading to Ramya’s arrest on August 19. Police are actively searching for her accomplice, Antony Das.
