The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested Sub-Inspector Rahul Malik from the Cyber Police Station in Rohini, New Delhi, for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 2.5 lakh. The bribe was part of a larger payment scheme involving several hawala operators based in Mumbai, Erode (Tamil Nadu), and New Delhi.
According to a CBI official, a case was registered after a written complaint was filed against Malik and other unknown individuals. The complainant, who operates a tours and travels business in Mumbai, had business dealings with a private company related to the Cash Management System (CMS). The complainant discovered that his login credentials provided by the company were created under a fake name, and the matter was under investigation at the Cyber Police Station in Rohini.
The situation escalated when Malik issued a notice to the complainant’s brother-in-law, who was involved in the investigation. Malik allegedly threatened both the complainant and his brother-in-law with arrest unless they paid a bribe. On March 7, 2025, Malik visited the complainant’s residence in Navi Mumbai, demanding a bribe of Rs 50 lakh to clear their names from the case. The following day, Malik met the complainant at a hotel in Ghodbunder Road, Mumbai, where he further threatened them and demanded Rs 16 lakh.
After further negotiations, Malik agreed to accept Rs 14 lakh and provided the complainant with the details of the hawala operators through whom the bribe money was to be routed. On March 19, 2025, CBI successfully laid a trap, during which a hawala operator in Mumbai accepted Rs 2.5 lakh on behalf of Malik as part of the bribe payment.
