The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Sunday apprehended Odisha police constable Arjun Nayak (36) and middleman Nimain Charan Sahoo (33) for their involvement in the Sub-Inspector (SI) recruitment scam. Both were placed in judicial custody after their bail pleas were denied.
Investigations revealed that Nayak and Sahoo were part of a larger network of racketeers who approached candidates for the Combined Police Service Examination (CPSE) 2024, promising them access to exam question papers in exchange for money. The arrests followed the interrogation of middleman Biranchi Kumar Nayak (43), who had been detained by the CBI on December 5.
This scam first surfaced on September 30, when Berhampur police arrested 117 people, including 114 aspirants. The state crime branch subsequently arrested eight middlemen. The CBI took over the investigation on November 12, making three arrests so far, including Arjun Nayak and Nimain Charan Sahoo.
To date, a total of 128 individuals have been implicated in the multi-layered fraud. Authorities continue to probe the network to identify and apprehend other participants.
