The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has successfully arrested Puran Bahadur Rai, an absconding accused in the murder of Madan Tamang, the president of Akhil Bharatiya Gorkha League (ABGL), in Darjeeling in May 2010. Rai was apprehended on Thursday from Bommasandra at Maruthi Nagar in Jigani, Bengaluru.

A warrant had been pending against Rai, who had been evading arrest since 2017. The CBI revealed that Rai had relocated to Bengaluru from Darjeeling to avoid legal action. Rai had been chargesheeted in the case and had failed to attend trial proceedings since 2017.

The Chief Judge of the City Sessions Court in Kolkata had issued a proclamation against Rai in April 2017, and an open-ended warrant was later issued in November 2024 after he failed to appear before the trial court. The CBI had been actively searching for him since the warrant’s issuance.

Puran Bahadur Rai will now be produced before the court for further legal proceedings.
