A former employee of a southern Illinois ambulance company has been accused of stealing over $1 million in a long-running fraud scheme, authorities announced.
Carrie J. Kelley, 43, of Sparta, was arrested on two counts of theft of property over $1,000,000, one count of wire fraud, and four counts of filing fraudulent Illinois income tax returns, according to the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators said they were first alerted to possible financial irregularities involving MedStar Ambulance. After a lengthy probe, authorities determined that more than $1,000,000 had been taken over several years. Kelley was arrested without incident on Friday by sheriff’s deputies and Illinois Department of Revenue investigators.
Sheriff Jarrod Peters praised the investigative team for its persistence.
“Their continued hard work and determination led to the arrest of Kelley,” he said.
Additional details regarding how the money was taken have not yet been released.
The Randolph County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Illinois Department of Revenue and the Illinois Attorney General’s Office during the investigation.
