SHOREWOOD, Ill. (WLS) — A caregiver was arrested on Monday after allegedly stealing jewelry and cash from a 90-year-old resident at an assisted living facility in Shorewood and attempting to destroy the evidence.

Shorewood police responded to a call at Timbers of Shorewood, located at 100 North River Road, after reports that Maryln C. Villalobos, 54, of Orland Park, had possibly taken valuables from an elderly resident and then locked herself in a bathroom.

Officers arrived at the scene shortly before 2 p.m. and found Villalobos inside the bathroom, actively trying to flush jewelry down the toilet. The 90-year-old resident later identified the recovered jewelry as their property.

Villalobos was arrested and taken to the police department for booking. While in custody, she reportedly asked to use the bathroom multiple times. Police say she used those opportunities to try flushing cash down the toilet.

She is now facing serious charges, including financial exploitation of the elderly, residential burglary, burglary, theft, and obstructing a peace officer.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not ruled out the possibility of additional victims or charges.
