CALLAWAY COUNTY, Mo. — A 40-year-old woman has been charged with child abuse after authorities say she failed to provide proper medical care to an 11-year-old child.

Deputies with the Callaway County Sheriff’s Office reported that the child had not received required medication or injections for seven to eight months, though treatments are mandated every two weeks. The child was taken into custody by the Children’s Division.

Court documents state that the child’s primary caregiver, Jennifer R. Shiflett, admitted she moved from Illinois to Missouri to avoid questions from the child’s school and Illinois Children’s Division regarding the child’s care. Records show the child had been taken to the emergency room in Illinois on August 29 for symptoms of his condition.

Shiflett has been charged with Abuse/Neglect of a Child – No Sexual Contact and is being held without bond at the Callaway County Jail.
