Assam Police have successfully cracked a major passport fraud case in the Patharkandi area of Sribhumi district. Two men, Burhan Uddin (38) and Faizur Rahman (38), have been arrested for trying to obtain an Indian passport for a Bangladeshi citizen using forged documents linked to a deceased Indian resident.
Authorities revealed the scam surfaced when a passport application was submitted in the name of Faruk Ahmed, who had already passed away. Ahmed, originally from Patharkandi, had his identity stolen to falsely claim Indian citizenship for the foreign national.
“Routine verification uncovered several inconsistencies in the birth certificate, Aadhaar card, and PAN card, all forged under Faruk Ahmed’s name,” said a senior police official. “Our probe confirmed these documents were fabricated to support the fraudulent passport application.”
Following this, police acted swiftly, arresting Burhan Uddin and Faizur Rahman, who were allegedly behind the creation of the fake papers. A large number of counterfeit identity documents were also seized.
The accused were presented before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court and are now in judicial custody.
Investigators suspect the involvement of a larger network operating across borders, fabricating and trafficking fake Indian identities. An in-depth inquiry is ongoing to determine if any government officials aided the racket.
