In a major cybercrime case, four employees of a private bank — including a branch manager — were arrested in Bulandshahr for their alleged involvement in a Rs1.93 crore scam targeting dormant accounts. The arrests were made after a Meerut resident, Mohd Aslam, reported suspicious activity in his long-unused bank account.
Aslam had opened the account in 2022 for his business and stopped using it by the end of that year. The fraud came to light in April 2025 when strangers visited his former address, alarming his family. On reviewing his account, Aslam found that the registered mobile number had been changed without his permission, and large transactions had taken place.
A cybercrime unit investigation traced the fraud to four bank insiders: Balram alias Balle, Ankit Sharma, Jitendra Kumar alias Jeetu, and Shubham Kaushik. According to police, they shared confidential customer data with cybercriminals and manipulated records to reactivate dormant accounts.
Police recovered 20 cheque books, 14 passbooks, and 7 ATM cards from the suspects. The group allegedly used forged KYC documents and fake written requests to update contact details and order new instruments, facilitating unauthorized withdrawals.
“These employees served as internal enablers, securing approval for fraudulent changes and helping the fraudsters gain control of dormant accounts,” an investigating officer stated.
During questioning, the accused named two alleged masterminds: Naval Saini from Gurgaon and Devit Gautam from Malagarh village, Bulandshahr. The duo reportedly led a cyber fraud ring targeting accounts of deceased individuals, those who had moved, or requested closures.
Superintendent of Police (Crime) Naresh Kumar confirmed the arrests, adding that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining three accused. “Raids are being conducted at multiple locations to dismantle this interstate cyber syndicate,” he said.
The operation allegedly funneled money using RTGS, NEFT, and UPI transactions, distributing the funds through a web of mule accounts across several states.
