COWETA COUNTY, Ga. — An 18-year-old Coweta County woman has been arrested after investigators say she deceived a former boyfriend into paying thousands of dollars in fraudulent child support.
According to the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office, Brya Hardy allegedly approached her ex-boyfriend and claimed he was the father of a baby, demanding child support payments. Investigators say the man paid approximately $7,000 before discovering the truth.
Authorities later confirmed that while there was a baby involved, the child was neither Hardy’s nor her former boyfriend’s.
Hardy was taken into custody around the New Year and charged with theft by deception. Investigators say scams involving fraudulent child support requests are not uncommon, but using another person’s child to carry out the scheme is a rare tactic.
The sheriff’s office is now asking the public for help in determining whether there may be additional victims. Anyone who has had dealings with Brya Hardy or has information related to the case is urged to contact the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office.
