COLUMBIA, S.C. — The Columbia Police Department arrested 44-year-old Brian King Monday following a violent incident that included escaping custody and stabbing a police officer.
King was initially taken into custody for vandalizing a business and attempting to break into another on Elmwood Avenue. After his arrest, he was transported to a hospital as a precaution. However, he later escaped from custody.
Authorities tracked King to the 1000 block of Pope Street, where he reportedly stole a car and crashed it into a stop sign. He then broke into a nearby home and stole a pocketknife.
When police confronted King, he resisted arrest and stabbed an officer in the upper arm with the knife. Despite the injury, the officer successfully subdued and arrested King.
Brian King now faces multiple charges including assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, resisting arrest with a deadly weapon, assault on an officer, first-degree burglary, auto-breaking, grand larceny, malicious injury to property, and escape.
The Columbia Police Department noted King’s extensive criminal record, which includes 26 arrests across nine agencies and over 20 convictions. As of Tuesday evening, King remains held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
