HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WPDE) — A Horry County case manager has been arrested for Medicaid fraud, according to the S.C. Attorney General’s Office.
Brett John Lerner, 32, of Longs, was charged Thursday with forgery (value less than $10,000) and medical assistance provider fraud, stemming from alleged falsified claims submitted to the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.
Investigators with the Vulnerable Adults and Medicaid Provider Fraud unit (VAMPF) said Lerner, who worked as a case manager at the S.C. Autism Society, allegedly submitted false payment claims between March 25, 2024, and June 27, 2024. He is accused of falsifying case notes and quarterly review plans, claiming services were provided to Medicaid beneficiaries that were never delivered.
Forgery (value under $10,000) is classified as a felony, punishable by up to five years in prison and/or a fine, while medical assistance provider fraud is a Class A misdemeanor, with penalties of up to three years in prison and fines of up to $1,000.
Lerner was released from the J. Reuben Long Detention Center on a $4,500 bond. The S.C. Attorney General’s Office will prosecute the case.
