Brenda Huggins Charged in Leon Jury Scam
A South Carolina woman has been arrested and charged with grand theft after authorities say she scammed a Leon County resident out of thousands of dollars through a fake jury duty scheme.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement announced that 56-year-old Brenda Huggins is accused of contacting the victim in 2025 and falsely claiming she had missed jury duty and that a warrant had been issued for her arrest.
Alleged Prepaid Card Scheme
Investigators say Huggins instructed the woman to pay alleged fines by purchasing prepaid debit cards from several businesses in Leon County. The victim complied, sending thousands of dollars.
Agents later identified Huggins as the person withdrawing the funds from ATMs in South Carolina.
FDLE officials confirmed Huggins was arrested on February 10 and is currently awaiting extradition to Florida to face the grand theft charge.
Authorities Warn of Growing Trend
The Leon County Sheriff’s Office held a press conference Thursday warning residents about a rise in similar scams.
Law enforcement officials reiterated that courts and law enforcement agencies do not demand payment via prepaid debit cards, gift cards, or cryptocurrency. Residents are urged to hang up on unsolicited calls involving threats of arrest and verify any claims directly with local authorities.
The investigation remains ongoing.
