OMAHA, Neb. — Brandon Mikesh, 29, has been found guilty in connection with the May 2024 homicide at Levi Carter Park, Omaha Police confirmed.
A jury convicted Mikesh on multiple charges, including second-degree murder, use of a firearm to commit a felony, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, tampering with evidence, and theft by receiving stolen property.
The case originally moved from Douglas County Court to the District Court of Douglas County for trial after an initial appearance on July 22, 2024. The trial began on December 8, culminating in Monday’s verdict.
Mikesh was arrested in connection with the shooting of 59-year-old Bernard Leonard, who was found unresponsive with a gunshot wound at 9th and Carter Boulevard on May 17, 2024. He has been held without bond since his arrest in June 2024.
Sentencing is scheduled for February 10 before Judge Katie Benson. Authorities emphasized that the investigation and trial highlighted the city’s continued focus on prosecuting violent crime.
