The BKC Police have cracked down on a gang defrauding jewellers by falsely promising to exchange 22-carat gold ornaments for 24-carat gold bars. Three individuals—Rakesh Lilani, Mohd Hanif Abdullah Shama, and Vikrant Rangraj Parekh—have been arrested in connection with the scam.
The accused approached jewellers with offers to swap their 22-carat jewellery for supposedly purer 24-carat gold biscuits and bars. They requested the jewellers to craft specific pieces and deliver them personally, assuring that genuine 24-carat gold bars would be given in return.
However, the gold bars provided were either fake or significantly less pure, leaving jewellers cheated after handing over their authentic ornaments. Following the transactions, the accused fled with the valuables.
Interrogation revealed the trio’s involvement in at least three similar fraud cases in BKC and another at VP Road Police Station. Formerly brokers for diamond traders, the suspects leveraged their industry connections to gain victims’ trust.
The police investigation is ongoing, with further arrests expected as authorities explore the full extent of the gang’s operations.
