In a chilling development from the heart of the capital, the murder of Rakesh (also known as Mona) in Shalbagan has been traced to a violent fallout over the sharing of drug trade profits. The NCC police have arrested two BJP leaders—Rajib Saha, a former panchayat member from East Gandhigram, and Tapas Ghosh—for their alleged roles in the incident.
Sources allege that several political figures from Shalbagan, Hatipara, and BSF Para have long operated a covert drug network. These individuals regularly met at Oxygen Park in Shalbagan, using the space to organize and control narcotics distribution.
On Sunday night, tensions boiled over during one such gathering. An argument over profit-sharing reportedly turned violent when Khokan Das and an associate attacked Rakesh, Sanjit, and Papon with a da (a sharp weapon). Shockingly, the BJP leaders present fled the scene as the assault unfolded.
Eyewitnesses, including nearby vendors and residents, rushed in to help the victims. As Khokan and his associate attempted to escape, an enraged crowd cornered and beat them near Subhash Colony before handing them over to the police.
All individuals involved, including the attackers and victims, were taken to GBP Hospital. Rakesh succumbed to his injuries around midnight. Sanjit and Papon remain hospitalized.
Following a formal complaint and preliminary inquiry, NCC police registered a case and arrested Rajib Saha and Tapas Ghosh on Monday. The court has granted police three days of custody for further questioning.
The murder has triggered statewide outrage, revealing a disturbing link between drug trafficking and political influence. Authorities expect more arrests as the investigation deepens.
