DECATUR, Ala. (WAFF) – A Decatur man is facing serious charges after allegedly filing a false insurance claim for $70,000 following a wreck involving his high-end sports car.

Billy Michael Johnson II was arrested Tuesday on Boys Ranch Road, accused of insurance fraud.

According to police, officers responded to a crash on April 5 on Duncansbury Drive SW, where they discovered a 2024 Chevrolet Corvette with significant damage. The vehicle had struck a parked car before being abandoned at the scene. Both cars were towed.

Later that day, Johnson, the registered owner of the Corvette, reported it stolen to police and his insurance company.

An investigation by Decatur Police found probable cause that Johnson had fabricated the theft to claim approximately $70,000 in insurance money. As a result, a warrant was issued for his arrest on May 8.

Johnson is currently being held in the Morgan County Jail on a $30,000 bond.
