A Ganjam district and sessions court has sentenced Biju Behera (29) to life imprisonment for the murder of 55-year-old Juria Bisoi in Dengaadar village, Berhampur.

The court found Behera guilty of fatally assaulting Bisoi with a wooden plank at a village community centre on March 7, 2023, following longstanding disputes between the two. Bisoi was discovered lying in a pool of blood by his brother, Rama Bisoi, who rushed him to MKCG Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

District and Sessions Judge Asant Kumar Das pronounced the verdict after examining testimonies from 15 witnesses, including eyewitnesses, investigating officers, and medical experts. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000, failing which Behera will undergo an additional one year of rigorous imprisonment, said public prosecutor Biswajit Baral.

Based on Rama Bisoi’s complaint, police registered a murder case at Sadar police station and arrested Behera on the same day. He has remained in judicial custody since then, as his bail pleas were consistently rejected by the court.
