A man has been arrested in northwest Delhi for allegedly duping a woman of Rs13.21 lakh by promising her a fake job in the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and issuing a forged appointment letter, police said on Wednesday.
The accused, identified as Bhupender Guru (27), targeted Manjesh Bijarinya, assuring her of a secure position in DMRC. He allegedly used a fake DMRC email ID to send a forged appointment letter, making the job offer appear authentic.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northwest) Bhisham Singh, the victim also submitted her original academic documents, believing the job to be legitimate.
Upon realizing she had been cheated, Bijarinya filed a complaint through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP). A case was then registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at the cyber police station.
The investigation faced challenges as the accused primarily used social media for communication and wasn’t residing at the address listed on his documents. Police used open-source intelligence and digital surveillance to trace his location.
Guru was eventually apprehended in Sultanpuri, and the victim’s original mark sheets were recovered from his possession. During interrogation, he confessed to the crime, confirming that the job offer was a fabrication.
The case highlights a growing trend in cyber-enabled job frauds, with police urging job seekers to verify offers and avoid making payments without confirmation from official sources.
