Bhubaneswar: Delhi Police have arrested Basudev Swain (35) of Lucknow and Deepak Kumar (40) of Varanasi for allegedly cheating a rice supplier of Rs20 lakh by posing as officials of a private company and using forged documents.

The duo was apprehended in the jurisdiction of Kharavel Nagar police station following a complaint from a businessman running MPD Retail, a rice and food supply company with 15 years of operations.

According to DCP (North West) Bhisham Singh, Swain, Kumar, and an accomplice identified as Amit Kumar Singh claimed to represent Smartvalue Limited, stating their company intended to purchase rice for testing and potential future procurement. However, after receiving the goods, the accused stopped responding to calls and messages.

Investigation revealed that none of the accused were associated with Smartvalue Limited. The documents, seals, and purchase orders they used were forged, and the rice had reportedly been sold for profit.

A case was registered at Subhash Place police station, and police examination of the forged documents confirmed their fraudulent activity. Swain and Kumar admitted involvement in the scam, stating that they began committing such offences to earn quick money. Authorities are actively searching for their third accomplice.
