Phagwara police have registered a case under Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code against Nirmal Singh, manager of Bank of India’s Phagwara branch, and commission agent Davinder Singh for allegedly defrauding a businessman of lakhs of rupees.
According to Superintendent of Police Rupinder Kaur Bhatti, Jasbir Singh, a businessman from Railway Road, Phagwara, was assured by Nirmal Singh that a bank account would be opened in his name and his money invested in profitable government schemes. Trusting the manager, Jasbir Singh handed over lakhs of rupees in cash on multiple occasions.
However, the manager neither opened the account nor invested the money as promised. When Jasbir Singh later sought information and documents, the manager avoided him but later handed over some papers claiming the funds had been invested by commission agent Davinder Singh, who worked closely with the bank.
On demanding a refund, Jasbir Singh was given bounced checks issued by Davinder Singh, owner of Guru Nanak Traders in Dana Mandi. For almost two years, the complainant struggled to recover his money, while Davinder Singh filed a counter-case against him and his family.
Following an escalation to the Deputy Inspector General of Jalandhar Range, SP Rupinder Kaur Bhatti led an investigation confirming the conspiracy between the two accused. After consulting with the District Attorney, SSP Gaurav Toora ordered the case registration against Nirmal Singh and Davinder Singh.
