In a significant breakthrough, the Special Task Force (STF) of West Bengal Police arrested two key suspects from Jharsuguda, Odisha, for their alleged involvement in the brutal murder of a father-son duo during recent violence linked to the Waqf Act in Murshidabad district.

The accused—Bani Israel and Sefaul Haque—residents of Sulitala village under Samserganj police station, are the sons of Ziaul Sheikh, the primary suspect in the killing of Hargobindo Das (72) and Chandan Das (40). The victims were reportedly hacked to death on April 11, 2025, in Jafrabad village during violent protests in Samserganj block.

A five-member STF team, supported by Jharsuguda police, conducted a late-night raid on Sunday at Banharpali. The arrests were confirmed by IG Northern Range Himanshu Lal and Jharsuguda SP Smit P Parmar.

Authorities also recovered two 7.62 mm country-made firearms and live ammunition during the operation. In addition to the arrests, six individuals suspected of harboring or assisting the accused have also been detained for questioning.

The violence surrounding the Waqf Act protests in Murshidabad resulted in the deaths of three individuals and injuries to several others. Police are continuing their investigation to uncover more details and determine if additional suspects were involved.
