The Dakshina Kannada District CEN Crime Police have arrested Avinash Ramesh Gowda for allegedly cheating a resident of Puttur of Rs 2.4 lakh by posing as a representative of an insurance company.

The 24-year-old accused, originally from Maharashtra and currently residing in Krishnarajapete, was taken into custody on Wednesday. He was later produced before the jurisdictional court, which remanded him to judicial custody.

According to the complaint filed by Yashodhara, he received multiple phone calls from an unidentified individual using different mobile numbers. The caller claimed to be an executive from an insurance company and offered to process an insurance policy, requesting payment for the same. The complainant declined the proposal.

Later, under the pretext of cancelling the policy, the accused allegedly persuaded the complainant to share his credit card details and One-Time Password (OTP). Using this information, Rs 2.4 lakh was fraudulently transferred from the complainant’s credit card to another account.

Police have registered a case under Section 66(D) of the IT Act and Sections 318(4) and 319(2) of the BNS. Further investigation is underway to determine whether more individuals were involved in the fraud.
