Avadi Police have arrested Rajbabu, a 52-year-old resident of Sengundram, for allegedly defrauding 10 individuals of Rs25 lakh by promising them government jobs. The scam came to light after the victims filed a complaint, claiming they had paid large sums of money to Rajbabu for job promises that never materialized.
According to police reports, the scam began in 2018 when Mutharasan, one of the victims, approached Rajbabu for a low-level job in the secretariat. Rajbabu convinced Mutharasan to help him spread the word, resulting in nine other aspirants also handing over Rs2.5 lakh each to Rajbabu in exchange for jobs. The victims also submitted their education certificates and passport-size photographs as part of the application process.
However, as the years passed and the promised jobs did not materialize, the victims began to demand their money back. Rajbabu returned only Rs11.7 lakh in total but continued to evade the rest of the payments. After repeated attempts to get their money back, the victims, led by Mutharasan, filed a formal complaint.
Based on Mutharasan’s complaint, Avadi Police launched an investigation and arrested Rajbabu for cheating. Rajbabu’s actions are part of a growing trend of job promise scams, where fraudsters prey on people’s desperation for government jobs, often taking advantage of their trust and desperation.
The case highlights the ongoing issue of fraudulent schemes involving promises of government employment, and the importance of verifying the legitimacy of such offers before making any financial commitments.
