HARLINGEN, Texas — Five suspects linked to a cartel-connected auto theft ring were arrested by the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities arrested Benito Martin Loredo, 28, who led the ring, alongside his wife, Andreina Gonzalez, 36, and accomplices Enrique Rodriguez Hernandez, 22; Jesus Leonardo Cantu Dominguez, 21; and Miguel Angel Zarate, 19.
The investigation, launched about four weeks ago, targeted thefts occurring from January to August 2025, during which approximately 140 vehicles were stolen in Cameron County.
The group reportedly targeted newer model cars and pickup trucks, using electronic devices to bypass security systems. Stolen vehicles were then driven to Mexico to be sold through local cartels.
Officials have recovered 20 stolen vehicles and seized the electronic tools used in the crimes.
Four suspects are in custody facing charges including motor vehicle theft, firearms theft, organized criminal activity, and evidence tampering. Gonzalez was released on bond. Additional charges may be filed as investigations continue.
Sheriff Manuel Treviño urged residents to lock vehicles and report suspicious activity to help prevent further thefts.
