Auburn Tigers wide receiver Malcolm Simmons was arrested on Wednesday evening in Lee County, Alabama, on domestic assault charges. According to jail records, the 20-year-old sophomore was taken into custody at 6:20 p.m. on suspicion of domestic assault involving strangulation or suffocation, a serious Class B felony under Alabama law.
His bond has been set at $20,000. If convicted, Simmons could face a prison sentence ranging from two to 20 years, along with fines up to $30,000.
Social media quickly circulated Simmons’ arrest records and mugshot, while TMZ released a video that allegedly shows the moment of the assault. The video has since gone viral online.
This arrest comes shortly after another Auburn player, linebacker DJ Barber, was dismissed from the team earlier this month following his arrest on drug trafficking charges.
The Auburn football program has not yet issued an official statement regarding Simmons’ arrest.
