The Assam Rifles seized highly addictive methamphetamine tablets valued at over Rs16.65 crore and arrested a woman drug peddler in Mizoram’s Champhai district, officials said on Wednesday.
Acting on credible intelligence regarding narcotics trafficking near the India-Myanmar border, Assam Rifles conducted a night operation in the Venglai area on Tuesday. Detecting unusual movement, troops carried out a swift search and recovered 5.55 kg of methamphetamine tablets—also known as Yaba or party tablets—containing methamphetamine and caffeine.
The arrested woman, identified as Zolianthangi, along with the seized drugs, was handed over to the Excise and Narcotics Department, Champhai for detailed investigation and legal proceedings.
An official statement emphasized that the operation is part of ongoing efforts to protect Mizoram’s youth from narcotics and maintain security in the region.
This seizure is the latest in a series of operations by Assam Rifles. In the past week, meth tablets worth Rs46.24 crore were confiscated in Mizoram through three separate operations, with three drug peddlers arrested. On November 27, meth tablets worth Rs16.26 crore were seized in Saitual district, and on November 26, tablets valued at over Rs13.33 crore were confiscated from a Myanmarese peddler.
Mizoram, sharing 510 km and 318 km unfenced borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh, respectively, faces significant smuggling challenges. Myanmar’s Chin state remains a hub for drug trafficking, wildlife smuggling, and other contraband through six Mizoram districts: Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Hnahthial, Saitual, and Serchhip.
