In a major operation against human trafficking, Assam Police successfully rescued two abducted minor girls and arrested nine individuals linked to an interstate trafficking network. The operation uncovered a well-organized racket operating between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Suraj Bhumij, Vishal Barman, Cheetah Barman, Nishita Bhumij, Phulumani Goyala, Biren Taid, Pankaj Doley, Raju Tide, and Udip Sharma, with arrests made in both Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
According to Tinsukia Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Nitisha Jagtap, the operation began on December 29, following the filing of a First Information Report (FIR) at the Tinsukia Police Station regarding the abduction of two minor girls.
“Two suspects were arrested right away, but the girls remained missing. Investigations led us to discover they had been taken to Arunachal Pradesh,” DSP Jagtap explained.
On January 2, police successfully rescued one of the girls from Itanagar and the other from Naharlagun, both in Arunachal Pradesh. The rescued girls provided vital information about their ordeal, which led to further interrogations and additional arrests.
The investigation revealed that human trafficking has become a profitable illegal business in the Northeast, with traffickers abducting or luring girls and selling them to other states for substantial amounts.
“The operation exposed a deeply rooted network exploiting vulnerable individuals,” DSP Jagtap remarked, emphasizing the seriousness of the trafficking issue in the region.
