In a significant drug bust in Assam’s Sribhumi district, authorities seized drugs worth Rs4.5 crore and arrested three individuals in connection with separate narcotic trafficking operations.
The first operation took place near Nilambazar railway station on Wednesday evening, where police apprehended two women, Manju Debnath (50) and her daughter Pushpa Debnath (35). The women were carrying 55 soap cases containing 616.24 grams of heroin valued at around Rs3.5 crore. Authorities believe the duo intended to smuggle the drugs to Tripura, but the police managed to thwart the illegal plan.
The officer in charge of Nilambazar police station confirmed that both women have been charged and the legal proceedings are underway. In a separate incident, BSF jawans arrested Altaf Hossain, a 40-year-old man, in Sribhumi town on Wednesday night. Altaf was found in possession of 50,000 Yaba tablets and heroin, which are estimated to be worth more than Rs1 crore. Altaf allegedly planned to transport the narcotics from Rail Colony to Tillabazar.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma commended the Sribhumi police for their swift action and successful operation, applauding their commitment to combating the drug menace. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities focused on dismantling the broader drug network involved.
