Assam Man Arrested After 31 Years for 1994 Arakkonam Murder

AI and voter data help nab fugitive in decades-old murder case

Police have arrested a man from Assam in connection with a brutal murder case dating back to 1994 in Arakkonam, Tamil Nadu. The accused, Bhaskar Jyoti Gogoi, had evaded arrest for over three decades until an innovative investigation using human intelligence, voter lists, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) led to his capture.

The case resurfaced when Jafar Siddique, the new DSP of Arakkonam, reviewed pending cases and noted the long-pending murder. Following approval from SP Vivekananda Shukla, Siddique formed a special team led by Arakkonam Town Inspector Thanga Gurunathan to track down the fugitive.

According to police reports, the victim, Jayashree, was killed by her husband Chowdhury, who was stationed at the INS Rajali Naval Air Station in Arakkonam. The couple had frequent domestic disputes, leading Chowdhury to conspire with Bhaskar Jyoti Gogoi, a navy personnel based in Kochi, to murder Jayashree by setting her on fire with kerosene. Chowdhury had initially misled the police by filing a suicide complaint.

After years of evasion, the police tracked Gogoi to Assam using the state’s voter list, which contained about 1,500 people named Bhaskar Jyoti. Narrowing down his location to Dibrugarh district, authorities used a 21-year-old photo and AI technology to generate a current likeness of Gogoi. This advanced technique helped police identify and arrest Gogoi, who was working as a tutor.

Following his arrest, Gogoi was produced before the court in Assam and then brought back to Tamil Nadu for interrogation at the Arakkonam police station. The investigation remains ongoing as police probe further details of the crime.
