Delhi Police have arrested 18-year-old Arshakrit Singh, a first-year B.Com student, for the brutal murder of Mahak Jain, also 18, in Sanjay Van, Mehrauli. The crime has shocked the city and raised serious concerns about the safety of students.

Mahak, a student at Delhi University’s School of Open Learning, went missing on June 1 after telling her family she was headed to class. She messaged her mother at midday saying she’d return home soon but was never seen alive again. Concerned, her family filed a missing person report at Mehrauli police station.

That evening, Arshakrit’s father contacted Mahak’s family claiming his son had been attacked and was in a hospital in Pitampura. The family rushed to Sanjay Van to search for Mahak but found nothing.

Following the missing person report and tip-off from the victim’s family naming Arshakrit, police took him into custody. During interrogation, he confessed to luring Mahak to a secluded spot in Sanjay Van, where he stabbed and strangled her, then attempted to burn her body. He suffered a minor hand injury in the process and later sought treatment — leading to his father’s misleading call.

Based on his confession, police recovered Mahak’s body and the murder weapon, a knife. Forensic teams collected evidence from the scene. The FIR has been updated to include murder and destruction of evidence.

Arshakrit, a resident of Rani Bagh, was reportedly known to Mahak. Investigators are probing the motive and whether the murder was premeditated.
